LEAVES OF LIFE
"I'm Laura Bee, a jewelry designer, and the mother of a child with diabetes. We've recently lived through an overwhelming life threatening experience.
My son, Brandon, was diagnosed with Diabetes as a young boy. We've spent many years struggling with type 1 Diabetes. Last year, he was also diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Doctors tried all possible treatments to get this disease under control, however, due to the complications of both the diabetes and the colitis, managing both became impossible. Over time it became unbearable for Brandon to function day to day due to the pain and dangerous erratic blood sugar levels he was experiencing.
Finally, another test revealed that Brandons colon was at the point of perforation. Brandon was rushed into life threatening emergency surgery. Fortunately, the surgery was sucessful. Unfortunatly, the next day, Brandon was back in ICU with diabetic ketoacidosis.
Brandon is one of the lucky ones. He survived. He has a deep inner strength that just refuses to give in to this disease. Likewise, modern medical advances in the battle to combat diabetes, allowed his life to be saved. Only a decade or so back, the life of a child in a similar situation would likely have been lost. We've gone through an additional 5 surgeries since. Brandon's on the road to recovery, but his type 1 diabetes will have to managed for the rest of his life.
Being a parent of a child with Type 1 Diabetes has not been easy. You want to take away this disease, but this is out of your control. You do your best to instill good eating habits, to encourage exercise, and to always be there for support. But you want to do more. The problem is you can't.
